The Exciting Art of Stained Glass
If you’ve ever been mesmerized by a beautiful piece of stained glass in a church or other building, you know how enchanting these works of art can be. And, while stained glass looks like an extraordinarily detailed and difficult craft, the fact is that anyone can learn to do it.
In order to learn to make stained glass, you’ll need two things: proper instruction and good stained glass supplies. There are many places to receive instruction on making stained glass. One of the best ways is by taking a beginner’s class. In many cases, you can find inexpensive classes at hobby stores or even through your local parks and recreation department. Choose a class that is taught by an experienced stained glass craftsman and you should be able to learn basic skills that will get you started on your own masterpieces. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can take a more advanced class to learn more intricate techniques.
Another way to help learn the basics of stained glass is through books. There are some very good manuals that can teach you the basic techniques and give you advice on the right stained glass supplies to purchase. Hobby shops and stores that sell stained glass supplies will carry a wide variety of books.
Once you’ve had an overview of technique and determined how you want to begin, you’ll need to purchase basic stained glass supplies to get started. Some of the basic tools include:
• Glass Cutting tool
• Glass pliers • Soldering iron • Glass grinder • Workboard • Lathekin or Fid • Glass pattern shears • Glass marking pens • Push pins/Layout kit • Drawing equipment • Straight edge/Glass square • Safety glasses or goggles • Bench brush or Whisk broom
